A man was killed in a crash involving a self-driving Tesla on California freeway, and investigators are still trying to determine whether the vehicle's Full Self-Driving system contributed to the crash.
I'm still reeling from the news that a pedestrian was killed in a crash involving a self-driving Tesla on a California freeway. The fact that this happened is devastating enough, but what really gets me is that the driver claimed the car was in Full Self-Driving mode at the time of the crash.
Tesla Crash Kills Pedestrian on California Freeway at 112km/h
According to confirmed reports, the victim was crossing Interstate 80 in Vallejo when the Tesla struck him. The pedestrian walked into the freeway from its right shoulder and began crossing lanes towards the center divide. Despite evasive actions by the Tesla, the right front portion of the vehicle struck the individual.
Teslas Autopilot System Under Scrutiny in Fatal Freeway Crash
The speed at which this happened is staggering - 112 km/h is incredibly fast, especially when you consider that the pedestrian was crossing the freeway from its right shoulder. It's hard to imagine how quickly things escalated.
No other vehicles involved in the crash stopped, and it's unclear who they were or what their role was in the incident. The CHP is still investigating and has not released any information about the identities of these drivers.
The Solano Area CHP is investigating the crash and has not said whether the Tesla's Full Self-Driving system contributed to the crash. This is a developing story, and I'll be keeping an eye on it for any updates.
